When you drive is it always on a smooth surface such as an expressway, highway, or city street, or is it in snow, mud, sand or rock? Driving on a smooth surface does not require a vehicle’s drive train and suspension to be engineered to handle rough road conditions. However driving off-road or on ice or snow requires a 4WD system to be sturdier than average. Jeep has been building off-road vehicles with 4WD systems that do the job since the 1941. The 2013-2014 Jeep family is no exception. Engineered and designed to travel on long trips with that smooth ride you are accustomed to and to meet the rugged requirements of off-road adventures.
This article will concentrate on the many attributes that make Jeep® the best in class for driving on all road conditions or off-road adventures where roads do not exist. All Jeep® models are available in 4WD. These include the Compass, Patriot, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models. Each is available with a 4WD system to meet the requirements of the vehicle. It may be every day driving in traffic with wet or icy conditions or off-road driving to a remote location on rocky or through muddy streams. Jeep has a traction system designed and tested to do the job.
The Jeep® brand offers a range of 4 Wheel Drive systems:
The Jeep® Quadra-Trac SRT 4WD system is available in the Grand Cherokee SRT8. Working with the 6.4L V8 engine it provides the strongest transfer case Jeep has produced. A full time 4WD system it is designed to perform under the toughest conditions with extreme on road performance. With a mechanical wet clutch and Electronic Limited Slip Differential in the rear wheels it will allow 100% of the drive torque to be sent to one wheel when required to maintain proper traction. Choose from five Selec-Track™ dramatic modes for traction in any driving condition. Auto, Sport, Snow, Track, and Tow modes are custom tailored for different driving and road conditions. When driving conditions change just spin the dial to the road condition. Or, just leave it in Auto and let it decide which mode to use.
The Jeep ® Wrangler Rubicon Rock-Trac® 4WD system is designed for the Wrangler Rubicon and Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Models. Driving in 2WD provides the best fuel economy. Transferring to 4WD engages the front axle and directs power to all four wheels. With the Break Lock Differential providing more control and torque at the wheels the Rock-Trac 4:1 low gear ratio and crawl speed delivers greater torque to the wheels when trekking over rocks or deep in a forest at a slow speed. You can go to places other 4WD vehicles only dream about.
The Jeep® Command-Trac® 4WD system designed for every day driving and is standard on the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Sport S and Wrangler Sahara, and delivers equal power to all four wheels to get you through the rough stuff. When driving in 2WD mode 100% of the torque is delivered to the rear axle. When advertise conditions such as rain, snow, mud, or ice occurs you can shift on the fly to the 4WD Command-Trac® system. 50% of the torque is then delivered to both front and rear axles.
The Jeep® Freedom Drive I™ 4WD system are available in the Compass and Patriot models. Great for everyday driving or on snow, ice, or in mud It monitors for wheel slippage at all times during normal driving it controls the torque to the rear wheels then when adverse condition occur it safely transfers torque to the rear axles to maintain control at all times and provide safe driving. With the 4WD Lock system you can shift from 2WD drive to 4WD on the fly.
The Jeep® Freedom Drive II® 4WD system is also available in the Compass and Patriot models. With an electronically controlled coupling attached to the rear differential it processes signals from all wheel sensors and the accelerator pedal, then determines the amount of torque to transfer to the rear wheels to maintain maximum control in all driving conditions. When the road conditions change at an unexpected moment the Freedom Drive II® 4WD system keeps you in control. Driving off-road on steep grades or rocky conditions you can rely on the Off-Road Package with a 19:1 ratio to engage and keep you moving over the roughest terrain.
